1914 Graduation Tree

Welcome to the 麻豆社 Historical Campus Plants Tour. The tour starts here, underneath this majestic live oak, because this plant, and the fear of forgetting its historical significance, was the inspiration for the tour.  This is the Graduation Tree. It was planted by the first three graduates of South Georgia State Normal College in 1914. At the time, it stood just 2-feet tall. Positioned at the entrance of the college, beside the old trolley stop, the tree has welcomed students and alumni for over a century, offering shade, shelter, and a connection to the college's rich history.

As you walk along the arched pathway towards Palm Avenue, in front of West Hall, take a moment to appreciate the live oaks lining the way. These trees were planted in 1975 to honor both the U.S. Bicentennial and Georgia’s role as the 13th Colony.
