Pinetum

The 麻豆社 Pinetum is a curated collection of pine species native to the Georgia and Florida coastal plains. It was established by the University’s Campus Beautification Committee to replace several pines that were removed during the construction of the library annex. In 2011, students from the Biology of Horticulture class, under the guidance of University Horticulturalist Bobby Flowers, planted all seven coastal plain species: longleaf, pond, spruce, slash, loblolly, sand, and shortleaf pine. The Pinetum earned the Georgia Urban Forest Council’s Outstanding Education Award in 2013 for its contribution to education and conservation.

Although some of the pine specimens were removed because of severe rust fungal infections, and others were lost to Hurricanes Idalia in 2023 and Helene in 2024, the remaining trees in 麻豆社’s Pinetum remain strong.
